Car-door assembly workers at Audi install approximately 300 trim strips per shift. As the weeks and months progress, that translates to stress on wrists and hands. In response, Audi has developed a special orthosis glove together with Spörer AG, based in Ingolstadt, Germany.
Spörer AG specializes in orthopedic technology.
The gloves, made of breathable Teflon, have a shock-absorbent lining that reduces force on the hand while an elastic fastener stabilizes the wrist. When worn, hand strain and pressure is reduced by 50 percent, but full functionality and mobility is retained.
Plants in Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm, Brussels, and Gyorare testing the new gloves and Audi plans to make them available to all assembly workers.
“With the production orthoses, we are once again demonstrating that ergonomically designed workplaces have top priority at Audi,” said Dr. Hubert Waltl, Board of Management Member for Production at Audi AG.
Audi worked closely with its production staff, plant doctors, and occupational safety specialists. Feedback from the workers was taken as the gloves were being developed. The orthoses glove project is part of the larger, “Workplace of the Future,” initiative. Dr. Waltl explained that Audi’s Production division is continuing to improve ergonomics as well as overall health and safety.
“This helps enhances the feeling of well-being in our production areas,” he said.
