Peter Palmer: Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pickup Revealed

Mercedes-Benz debuted the X-Class pickup concept recently in Stockholm, Sweden. According to the automaker, the X-Class should be production bound by late 2017.

Powerful Partnership

The X-Class concept is the first vehicle to come from a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Nissan. The pickup is based on Nissan’s Navara, but the powertrain, styling, and amenities are all from Mercedes-Benz.

When it goes on sale, the X-Class will become the fourth model in the Mercedes-Benz van lineup.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup will be available with multiple engine choices including a 3.0 L Bluetec turbo diesel V6, similar to the one currently used in the Sprinter van. Permanent all-wheel drive is standard, along with a transfer case, and lockable rear and inter-axle differentials.

Model Variants

At the launch, Mercedes-Benz displayed two versions of the X-Class: the stylish explorer and the powerful adventurer. The “stylish explorer” looks more upscale with large 22-inch rims, low-profile tires, monochromatic exterior paint, and a tailgate surrounded by LEDs. The “powerful adventurer” looks ready to tackle anything off the beaten path with features like stubby tires, a winch, and plastic lower body cladding.

Both versions were based on a five-passenger crew cab with full-sized doors and a short bed.

Interior Features

The interior of the X-Class follows a similar design layout as other Mercedes-Benz models. The dashboard features their familiar instrument cluster, along with SL-inspired air vents, floating infotainment screen, and three-spoke steering wheel. The COMMAND rotary knob and touchpad are located between the gear shifter and the center armrest.

Global Markets

Mercedes-Benz expects to sell the X-Class in a number of countries including Australia, South America, South Africa, and Europe. In Australia alone, Mercedes-Benz claims that midsize trucks account for 14.1 percent of auto sales.

Interestingly, there are no plans to bring the X-Class to North America, at least for now.
