Toyota Expands Takata Air Bag Recall

Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. is expanding a recall, based on recent information from Takata and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involving Takata front passenger air bag inflators.

According to Takata, a safety defect may arise in a particular type of front passenger air bag inflator due to propellant degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

This may result in a rupture when the air bag deploys.

The recall expansion involves approximately 1,584,000 additional vehicles in United States. Here is the list of vehicles included in this recall:

2009 – 2011 Corolla, Matrix
2006 – 2011 Yaris
2010 – 2011 4Runner
2011 Sienna
2008 – 2011 Scion xB
2007 – 2011 Lexus ES
2010 – 2011 Lexus GX
2006 – 2011 Lexus IS

All known owners of the affected Toyota, Scion, and Lexus vehicles will be notified by first class mail. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the air bag inflator or the air bag assembly at no cost.

Information about automotive recalls, including but not limited to the list of involved vehicles, is subject to change over time.
