General Motors announced a near doubling of the workforce at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly.  A second shift and more than 1,200 hourly and salaried jobs will be added, increasing the plant’s personnel to approximately 2,800. The plant currently operates a single 8 hour shift, five days a week.

Increasing demand for the four, soon to be five, vehicles produced at Detroit-Hamtramck’s 4.1 million-square-foot facility prompted the hiring blitz.  GM has invested $1 billion in the last 6 years, making it one of their most cutting edge manufacturing entities.

The Chevrolet Volt, Impala, Malibu, and Cadillac ELR are built there.

Production of the Cadillac CT6 is expected to begin at Detroit-Hamtramck early next year. Second shift hiring is underway and expected to start around the same time.  A Cadillac Eldorado came off the line at 12:05 p.m. on February 4th, 1985, making it Detroit-Hamtramck’s first vehicle.  Since then, more than four million have been built.

Gary West, Detroit-Hamtramck’s Plant Manager credited the confidence GM has in the employees to build award winning products for customers.  UAW Local 22 Shop Chairman, Don LaForest agreed, citing the gratitude and excitement the staff have for the future expansion.

“The workforce at Detroit-Hamtramck is second to none,” he said.
