2016 Camaro Headed to Dealerships

2016 Camaro Production

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is heading to showrooms soon – and perhaps one will end up in your driveway before the end of the year?  The first ones will roll off the line this week, putting them on dealership lots by the middle of next month.

Camaro’s performance strategy focused on a few main points: weight reduction, aerodynamics, and handling. Depending on the model, overall mass was reduced between 223 and 390 pounds as the pony car underwent rigorous, wind tunnel testing. The new Camaro rides on a much leaner but stiffer platform for increased efficiency and handling.

The 2016 Camaro was specifically sculpted for aerodynamic advantages.

Multiple powertrain combinations are available, including a standard 2.0L Turbo, an all-new 3.6L V-6 for LT models, and the LT1 6.2L V-8 in the SS.  The latter creates 455 horsepower, making it the most powerful Camaro SS yet.  Each engine is available with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2016 Camaro starts at $26,695 for the 1LT and $37,295 for the 1SS.

The Gen Six Camaro will be assembled at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly in Lasing, Michigan.  The facility, which received a $175-million tooling upgrade to support Camaro production, opened in 2001.  The 2016 Camaro represents, for the 1,200 employees, a thrilling milestone.

“It is exciting for everyone involved with bringing the new Camaro from a concept to the assembly line,” said Mike Trevorrow, Lansing Regional Plant Manager. “As the transporters head out to dealerships across the country, the hard work and pride of everyone at Lansing Grand River Assembly goes with them.”

Lansing Grand River is also responsible for building the Cadillac CTS sedan, coupe, wagon, and V-series, along with sedan and coupe versions of the ATS.  UAW Local 652 President Mike Green maintains the addition of the 2016 Camaro is a testament to Lansing Grand River.

“We have received great products here because of the quality of work always performed by the Lansing autoworker, active and retired,” he said.

The first Chevrolet Camaro went on sale September 29th 1966, as a 1967 model year.
